Study: Walnuts Can Boost Brain Health

A study done at the New York State Institute for Basic Research in Developmental Disabilities found that consuming walnuts can help maintain brain health, reduce anxiety and improve memory and learning skills. The research was led by Abha Chauhan, Ph.D., and published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.

How walnuts can boost the brain
According to the Washington Post, this research stems from a previous study done by Chauhan that discovered the powerful effect of walnut extract against amyloid beta protein. This protein has been shown to contribute to memory loss.

The study looked at mice who were scientifically altered to be at risk for oxidative stress and inflammation – key elements that lead to cognitive decline in humans as well. The mice were given daily supplements containing 6-9 percent walnuts, or what would be the equivalent of 1-1.5 ounces of walnuts for humans.

After the mice were fed the supplements, the researchers put them through mazes and tests that examined their psychomotor skills, coordination, as well as their spatial and learning ability. Results showed that the mice who were consuming walnuts performed at a much higher rate than those who didn’t. The walnut-eating mice also had reduced anxiety and better motor skills.

The Washington Post reported that the study chose to use walnuts because they contain a plethora of healthy benefits. The nuts have important nutritious compounds including omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown to reduce inflammation in the body, an important factor in maintaining brain health and reducing memory loss.

Omega-3 fatty acids can be consumed through a variety of foods other than walnuts, including whole grains, dark leafy greens and oily fish. They can also be consumed through a supplement, such as Omax3. While other supplements on today’s market contain 30-40 percent concentrated omega-3, Omax3 packs 93.9 percent. This premium product, which was created by doctors associated with Yale University, is ideal for maximum human performance.

Essential takeaways

  • New research published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease found a link between consuming walnuts and a healthy brain.
  • The study looked at two groups of mice – one that ate walnuts and one that didn’t.
  • After participating in a series of tests, it was determined that the mice who consumed walnuts performed better than those who didn’t.
  • Some of the main healthy compounds in walnuts that improve brain health are omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Omega-3s can also be consumed through a supplement like Omax3.
