Do These 5 Things to Improve Your Memory

Do These 5 Things to Improve Your Memory

When we start to forget things, it’s time to look at how we can improve our memory.

Are things becoming harder to remember? Do you have that moment when you just meet someone and forget their name a split second later? Do you forget where you place things all the time? If you answered yes to any one of these questions, you may be having problems with your memory.

It’s time to focus on improving your memory. In our workaholic, high-stress culture, it is easy to forget how easily our daily life impacts our ability to remember. Lack of sleep, high amounts of stress, and poor diet all have a hand in negatively impacting our memory and can possibly lead to the development of diseases like Alzheimer’s disease. With dementia and Alzheimer’s becoming more prevalent and with a growing high-stress culture, it’s best to take a step back and figure out what preventive measures to take to improve memory.

Doing these 5 things will help improve your memory:

1. Add anti-inflammatory foods to your diet.

The American diet is not known for being healthy. The standard diet usually consists of food like red meat, sugar, and dairy, which are all foods that trigger inflammation. Inflammation is also an indicator of certain chronic diseases like coronary heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, etc. The inflammation can also have an effect on the hippocampus. This is the part of the brain that deals with memory. Eating a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, lean proteins, and lots of veggies and fruit will help reduce inflammation and improve your overall health.

2. Get rest.

No, seriously, get some rest. The brain is like a muscle and needs rest in order to operate at its best. However, make sure you don’t get too much. Research studies have shown getting between 7-8 hours of sleep is the best amount in order to gain maximum benefits. When people got less than 6 hours or more than 8 hours of sleep, researchers saw cognitive impairment. Getting just enough rest will allow your brain to sort through the day’s events and allow you to wake up refreshed and ready to go.

3. Exercise it out.

Go out and exercise. Numerous studies have shown the connection between exercise and positive brain health. Frequent exercise promotes blood flow to the brain and helps to fortify the mind and memory. Studies have also shown an increase in the healthy white matter, which is important for memory. Exercising has been shown to be essential for our brains as we age.

4. Consider a nootropic.

Known as brain enhancement supplements, nootropics have been known to help with a variety of things. They have been known to enhance cognitive abilities like memory, focus, and productivity. However, finding the right type of nootropic and dosage is where most of the difficulty lies. Once you find the perfect formula that works for you, you’ll be able to see an improvement.

5. Cut out alcohol.

Hear us out. Studies have shown that alcohol helps to contribute to illnesses like dementia. A recent study also showed that even small amounts of alcohol can negatively impact our memory. How? Alcohol blocks the REM sleep cycle, which is what prevents us from being able to remember new information. If you’re used to drinking frequently, slowly start weaning yourself off. You should start seeing a difference in your memory and sleep soon after that.

Once you start incorporating these lifestyle changes into your life, you may start seeing a great deal of difference in your ability to remember. If you’re already starting to show frequent signs of forgetfulness, it’s important to start focusing on improving your memory now. Just remember to exercise patience as you adjust your habits.
