Dark Chocolate May Actually Help Our Heart

Dark chocolate is the key to our heart.

What do you think of when you think of Valentine’s Day? Do you think of rose petals strewn around the bedroom? Giant stuffed animals and flowers given as gifts? Or do you think of all the chocolate? If you think like we do, you are probably a huge fan of chocolate on Valentine’s Day. And the best thing to get your partner (or yourself) is chocolate.

Why? Because chocolate, more specifically dark chocolate, is full of a variety of health benefits. If you want to get your partner chocolate, opt for dark chocolate for heart health.

Dark chocolate contains powerful plant antioxidants called flavonoids. They have anti-inflammatory properties that can help lower blood pressure and protect against heart disease and strokes. Flavonoids have been shown in several large studies to be connected to lower cardiovascular disease risks in various groups.

Not all varieties of dark chocolate contain enough flavonoids for these benefits. Select dark chocolate with 70% cocoa (or cacao) or higher. Consuming 1 to 2 ounces in a day provides the desired amounts of flavonoids while keeping fat and calories in check.

One thing to keep in mind is the added sugar. Dark chocolate is an amazing source of vitamins and minerals, but keep in mind how much sugar you are taking in.

Moderation (and chocolate) are key to maintaining our hearts this Valentine’s Day.
